Shift Registers

SHIFT REGISTERS

AIM:

To set up and verify the performance of a serial in parallel out shift register and Serial/parallel input shift register using mode control using JK and D flip flops.

MATERIALS AND TOOLS REQUIRED:

7476, 7474,7408,7404, 7432 and digital trainer kit, Power supply.

THEORY:

A register is a group of flip flops that can be used to store a binary number.  A shift register is nothing but a register which access a binary number and shifts it.  The data can be entered to the shift register either in serial or parallel.  Similarly, the output can be taken from it either serial or in parallel.  Since there are Two ways to shift data into a register  and similarly two ways to shift data out of register, four basic register types can be constructed viz., Serial in Serial out (SISO), serial in parallel out (SIPO), parallel in serial out(PISO), parallel in parallel out(PIPO).

Circuit Diagram:

PROCEDURE:
  1. Test all the components and Ic packages using Multi meter and Digital IC tester.
  2. Setup Serial input shift register using JK flip flop. Clear all the flip flops using CLEAR pins.  Feed a 4 bit binary data to the serial input starting from LSB.
  3. Apply 1Hz clock and observe the bits are shifting right. Repeat the above using DFF.
  4. Set up serial/parallel input shift register.  Enter a data serially keeping Load/Shift=1.  Apply clock pulses and note the outputs after each clock pulse.
  5. Enter a data parallel with load/shift =0.  Output can be obtained in parallel or in serial form.

RESULT:

The following Shift registers are designed using JK and D FFs,

  • Serial in Parallel out Shift register.
  • Serial/parallel input shift register using mode control.
