MAINTANANCE OF LEAD ACID BATTERY

7- MAINTANANCE OF LEAD ACID BATTERY

Aim

To study the maintenance of lead acid battery.

INTRODUCTION:

After long use of battery or keeping the battery ideal, for a long period, the battery becomes useless and it requires replating.

MATERIALS REQUIRED:

Lead burning set with two carbon rods, new cell connector, new positive,  negative plates and seperators.

PROCEDURE:

  1. Remove the caps of vent plug of battery.
  2. Remove the connectors by cutting them.
  3. New chisel out the covers of the battery.
  4. Take out the assembled discharged plates from the battery.
  5. Remove seperators (wooden or cork) between negative and positive plates.
  6. Take new sets of positive and negative plates and connect them by means of post straps (of lead ) to common terminals.
  7. After assembling the plates insert the separators in each gap.
  8. Assemble the two sets of plates.
  9. Clean the Bakelite or glass container for resting of plates.
  10. Place the assembled plates in the container keeping the lead terminal with their positive and negative projecting alternately.
  11. Melt the insulating bituminous compound (filler material) and fill in the top portion of the battery.
  12. Mould cell covers.
  13. Mould connectors by using commercial lead.
  14. Place the battery covers at the proper places and fill the gaps by insulating materials.
  15. Fix the connectors to every positive and negative electrode (placed side by side).
  16. Take suitable amount of water in a beaker and pour concentric sulpuric acid in drops until the specific gravity of mixture comes up to 1.21

PRECAUTIONS:

  1. Do not add water to acid otherwise a huge amount of heat will be produced.
  2. Remove the vent plugs while connecting the battery with battery charger.  .
  3. When the battery becomes charged, disconnect if from the charging units.
  4. Allow the battery to cool down the test.

RESULT:

Studied the maintenance of lead acid battery.
